How many times can you retake the Latvian exam
Short answer: as many as you need. But every attempt starts from zero — including the parts you already passed. Below is what the regulation actually says, with clause numbers, because forums get this wrong in both directions.
What a retake really costs
Not only €52. Weeks pass between registering and the date, and next time you sit all four parts again — including the one where you scored 100%. That is why preparing for «Latvian in general» is the expensive way, and preparing for the part that failed you is the cheap one.

How many attempts do I get?
The rules set no maximum. You can take the exam as many times as you need, registering again each time.
Do I have to wait before retaking?
For an ordinary retake the regulation sets no minimum waiting period — in practice the schedule of exam sessions decides. The six-month wait applies only if a previous attempt was annulled for breaking the rules of the exam (clause 34).
Do I pay the fee again?
Yes — €52 for each attempt. People who are exempt stay exempt for retakes too, including those with Ukrainian civilian status (clause 61.2).
Is the fee refunded if I fail?
No. It is not refunded for a failed exam, for not showing up, or for an attempt annulled because of a rule violation (clauses 28.7–28.9).
Do the parts I already passed carry over?
No. To pass, you need at least 60% in each of the four parts within a single attempt. Results of individual parts are not transferred to the next attempt — the chronologically latest decision is the valid one (clause 56).
Is failing the first time unusual?
No. Of 11,301 people who registered in the 2023 wave, 6,893 — 61% — did not pass on the first attempt. Retaking is the normal path, not a sign that something went wrong.
What should I do differently before the next attempt?
Work on the part that failed you, not on everything at once. Since one part below 60% fails the whole exam, an hour spent on your weakest part is worth more than an hour spread evenly.
